Welcome to McDaniel's Mighty 1st Grade Class
We are so excited about this year and we are ready to learn.
This is my 21st year teaching school and my 11th year at Torrence.
I went to Lees-McRae College where I earned an Associates Degree and I earned my Bachelor's Degree from Appalachian State University. I am from Charlotte. I went to Paw Creek Elementary, Coulwood Junior High, and West Mecklenburg High School. I now live in Huntersville with my husband and two children. My philosophies of teaching are that I want to create an environment where children feel safe, where children feel safe to take risks, and where children feel safe in learning. I believe that all children can learn no matter what. Children come first in our classroom, always. You will find lots of hugs, laughter, and learning going on in our room. I also appreciate and invite lots of parent involvement.
McDaniel's Homework Tips
* Homework in 1st grade should never take too long and should never be longer than 40 mins. I ask parents to read with their children every night for at least 20 mins.
* When reading with your child, you could do a couple of things that would help them become better readers:
* Read a book for pleasure (no questions to answer) and one for school to make it more fun.
* Also when doing homework let them do as much as they can by themselves and never make it a battle.
*The most important thing is for your child to read to you out loud for 20 minutes everynight.
*They can always finish on another day.
* Practice sight words while reading.
* If you have concerns or questions please ask me.
* MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL HAVE FUN!!!!!!
Please feel free to contact us with any problem and concerns. Parents are always welcome in our classroom.
*Contact by website, cell phone or school.

* When reading with your child, you could do a couple of things that would help them become better readers:
- Choose books that are "just right" (leveled)
- Ask them questions about what they are reading like:
- Who are the main characters?
- Where and when did the story take place?
- Did they like the story and why?
- Has this ever happened to them or anyone they know?
- Asking questions help make sure they understood the story.
